Why Every Beginner Should Try Reformer Pilates

If you've ever looked at a Pilates reformer and thought, "That looks complicated" — you're not alone. With its springs, straps, and sliding carriage, the reformer can seem intimidating to newcomers. But here's a secret that Pilates instructors know: the reformer is actually one of the best tools for beginners.

The Reformer Advantage for Beginners

Built-in support. The reformer's springs provide resistance AND assistance. This means the machine helps you perform movements correctly, even when your muscles aren't strong enough to do them on their own yet.

Guided movement. The carriage moves on a track, which means your body is guided through a specific range of motion. This reduces the chance of performing exercises incorrectly and helps you develop proper movement patterns from day one.

Adjustable difficulty. Springs can be changed to make exercises easier or harder. Your instructor can customize every movement to your current level, making the same exercise accessible for a complete beginner and challenging for an advanced practitioner.

Immediate feedback. You can feel the reformer working. The resistance of the springs gives you instant feedback about whether you're engaging the right muscles. This body awareness is one of the most valuable things Pilates teaches.

What Your First Session Looks Like

A beginner reformer session with Molly typically includes:

  • An introduction to the machine and how it works
  • Basic breathing and core engagement techniques
  • 4-6 foundational exercises performed slowly with detailed instruction
  • Modifications for any physical limitations or concerns
  • Time for questions and feedback

You won't be expected to know anything coming in. That's what the instructor is for.

What to Wear and Bring

Wear comfortable, fitted clothing (loose fabric can catch on the machine). Grip socks are recommended but not required. Bring water and an open mind.

Ready to Try?

The hardest part is showing up for the first time. After that, most people are surprised by how much they enjoy it — and how different their body feels after just one session.
